Severe weather advice

Severe Weather Warning (Damaging Winds and Damaging Surf) for South West. Cancelled Lower West and Great Southern

Thu 11:05 WST
Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS and DAMAGING SURF

For people in parts of South West district.

Issued at 11:05 am Thursday, 27 June 2019.

Damaging winds may occur across southwestern parts of the South West Land Division as a pool of cold unstable air follows the passage of a cold front this morning.

Weather Situation:
A pool of cold unstable air is following in the wake of a cold front moving through the South West Land Division.

Showers and thunderstorms associated with the cold unstable air may produce DAMAGING WINDS with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour that could cause DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY within the warning area until early Thursday afternoon. The worst weather is expected along coastal parts before conditions begin easing from midday on Thursday.

Showers and thunderstorms may produce moderate to heavy rainfall and small hail at times.

A combination of a rising swell and strong winds will likely result in DAMAGING SURF CONDITIONS along the coast during Thursday which could cause SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION.

Locations which may be affected include Manjimup, Margaret River, Augusta, Dunsborough, Walpole and Windy Harbour.

Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Lower West and Great Southern districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.

Cape Leeuwin recorded a wind gust of 96km/h at 8:06am AWST.

This is typical weather for this time of year but winds may cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams.
* Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.
* Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning.
* If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.
* Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris.
* Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
* Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris.
* Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should always be treated as live.
* Assess your home, car and property for damage.
* If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance company to organise permanent repairs.
* If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AWST Thursday.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and Department of Fire and Emergency Services would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
